Reef Cities

Most cities are built.

Reef Cities are grown.

These living settlements are constructed through the controlled cultivation of engineered biological structures. Specialized organisms deposit structural materials, regulate environmental conditions, recycle waste, and continuously expand the habitat over time.

Growth begins with a small seeded framework. Over decades, entire districts emerge as successive generations of engineered reef organisms add new layers, chambers, transportation corridors, and utility networks.

Unlike conventional architecture, Reef Cities remain biologically active throughout their existence. They heal damage, adapt to environmental changes, and occasionally reorganize themselves in response to long-term growth pressures.

Residents often describe living within one as occupying a partnership rather than a structure.

The city supports its inhabitants.

The inhabitants maintain the city.

Over centuries, the distinction becomes increasingly academic.

A Reef City is not alive in quite the same way as its citizens.

But neither is it entirely something else.
