Ice-Bore Cathedrals
The outer system does not build downward.
It excavates Worlds.
Ice-Bore Cathedrals are colossal excavation complexes used to create habitable chambers within the frozen crusts of moons, dwarf planets, and cometary bodies. Combining thermal drilling systems, pressure stabilization networks, and autonomous construction swarms, these facilities carve enormous volumes from solid ice while maintaining structural integrity across immense scales.
Many Cathedrals eventually become population centers themselves.
As excavation progresses, industrial galleries evolve into transportation hubs, residential districts, reservoirs, research facilities, and agricultural zones. New chambers branch outward over generations, creating labyrinthine settlements hidden beneath kilometers of frozen crust.
The name originated among workers who compared the illuminated vaults of early excavation sites to ancient religious architecture. Engineers initially objected.
The name survived.
Today, some Ice-Bore Cathedrals contain inhabited spaces measured in cubic kilometers. Artificial suns hang from ceilings. Rivers flow through chambers that once consisted entirely of solid ice.
Their builders still insist they are infrastructure.
